Merastri Restaurant X Heraklion, 2021

A neoclassical residence, in the city center of Heraklion, Crete, was remodeled to house the restaurant “Merastri”. Particular architectural elements, associated with the strong history of the listed building, are preserved and highlighted through an eclectic approach. The decorative frames of the openings, the high-ceilinged spaces and the geometric patterns on the floors promote the historicity of the building and highlight the timelessness of the space.

The architectural approach takes on a scenographic character, projecting the building’s past under a contemporary prism. The new elements are seamlessly integrated into the architectural background of the 1930s. Hand-made ceiling lights are combined with wall lights, specially designed for the specific project, while the floor was preserved and maintained, with the aim of restoring it to its original form. The circular fireplace dominates the center of the space, as a conceptual metaphor for the “heart”.

Wood is combined with metal elements of a strong geometric character and copper details, while the transparency of the glass “dialogues” with the visible stone on the walls. The design goal was for the remodeled space to exude elegance, modern aesthetics, but also intimacy, integrating elements of a traditional dining space.
